Audioconference to Focus on Out-of-School Time Programs for Older Youth
A free, hour-long audioconference hosted by the YEF Institute will focus on “Using Out-of-School Time Programs for Older Youth to Improve College Access and Workforce Development.” The call will be held Thursday, March 25, at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Speakers on this call will discuss out-of-school time programs that help older youth with high school completion; credit attainment and recovery; job skill development and exposure to careers; service learning; and college preparation. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter Opens College Assistance Office
On February 23, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter’s Office of Education opened a new PhillyGoes2College Office (PG2C) within City Hall and launched a companion website, www.PhillyGoes2College.com. These two sources of college access information are part of Mayor Nutter’s education agenda to double the percentage of Philadelphians who attend and complete college in the next five to 10 years. The other education goal set by Mayor Nutter for the Mayors’ Action Challenge for Children and Families is to cut the city’s dropout rate in half in five to 10 years. Webinar on Effective Data and Evaluation Strategies to Measure Success
The YEF Institute will partner with the Prevention Institute's Urban Networks to Increase Thriving Youth (UNITY) through Violence Prevention to sponsor a webinar on "Measuring Success: Effective Data and Evaluation Strategies for Cities." The webinar will take place Wed., March 24, at 2:00-3:30 p.m. EST, and will help cities learn how to fully utilize data to evaluate their efforts to keep residents safe. New Strategy Guide on Strengthening Partnerships and Building Public Will for Out-of-School Time Programs
With support from the Wallace Foundation, the YEF Institute has developed a new strategy guide on Strengthening Partnerships and Building Public Will for Out-of-School Time Program. The guide describes three key strategies that city leaders can use to generate support for access to high-quality out-of-school time activities. It highlights a broad range of examples of how cities have successfully implemented each strategy, from partnerships with universities to coordinated communications plans. Publicly-Funded Jobs: An Essential Strategy for Reducing Poverty and Economic Stress Throughout the Business Cycle
This paper – coauthored by Clifford Johnson, executive director of NLC's YEF Institute; Amy Rynell, director of the National Transitional Jobs Network; and Melissa Young, associate director of the National Transitional Jobs Project –makes the case for using public-service employment (PSE) and transitional jobs (TJ) programs to combat economic recession and advance long-term workforce development goals. NLC to Assist Southern Cities in Combating Childhood Obesity
NLC’s YEF Institute is one of seven national organizations that will receive grant support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) in helping Southern communities reduce childhood obesity. The grants were awarded through Leadership for Healthy Communities, a national RWJF program that assists state and local leaders in their efforts to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic. The Institute will launch a two-year effort to provide municipal leaders in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi with peer learning opportunities and technical assistance in adopting and implementing policy changes that promote healthy eating and active living. Gang Prevention Toolkit Now Available to City Leaders
The YEF Institute has published a new toolkit on Preventing Gang Violence and Building Communities Where Young People Thrive. The toolkit draws upon lessons learned over the past three years from the California Cities Gang Prevention Network, a 13-city network formed to identify strategies for reducing gang violence and victimization.
The kit highlights a wide range of city practices and contains eight chapters divided into three sections: marshalling resources to fund anti-gang strategies; strategic partnerships within the criminal justice system, and with county agencies, schools, neighborhoods, and the faith community; and targeted approaches, including street-level outreach and facilitating reentry from detention facilities. Seven Cities Launch Collaborative Efforts to Improve College Graduation Rates
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced $4 million in grants to the YEF Institute and seven cities to boost college graduation rates by better coordinating the services that colleges, schools and communities provide to students.
The Communities Learning in Partnership project is part of the Gates Foundation's Postsecondary Success Strategy, which aims to double the number of low-income young adults who earn postsecondary degrees or credentials by age 26. Selected cities for the nine-month planning phase of the project include Dayton, Ohio; Jacksonville, Fla.; New York City; Mesa, Ariz.; Phoenix; Riverside, Calif.; and San Francisco.
