The National League of Cities (NLC) is excited to present the summer convenings for the Hispanic Elected Local Officials (HELO) and Local Indigenous Leaders (LIL) constituency groups in Columbus, Ohio, alongside NLC’s Summer Board and Leadership Meeting.
Constituency Groups are caucuses within NLC, giving local elected officials a space to express themselves and advocate for the needs of their community. They reflect the diverse interests and backgrounds of NLC’s membership and contribute to NLC’s leadership development, policy formulation, advocacy and program activities. As these groups continue to address current issues facing their respective communities, this convening will be an excellent opportunity for attendees to:
- Connect with peers from across the country, including local officials and municipal staff of Hispanic, Latino/a, Indigenous and Native American descent.
- Learn what issues and projects municipalities in the area are taking on.
- Attend workshops to bring back tools and resources to enhance your city.
- Explore creative solutions to challenges experienced in your communities.
What to Expect
Attendees will participate in a half-day of programming, including engaging panels, informative workshops and peer discussions on topics that local leaders around the country are addressing.
This year, HELO is striving to bring local leaders resources on the following areas:
- Helping local leaders navigate immigration policy under the new administration
- Access to health and mental health care for Latinos, particularly Latino youth
- Addressing the lack of affordable housing in our communities
LIL has chosen to focus on the following topic areas this year:
- Engage with NLC on Federal Policy issues, such as MMIW/P – Missing Murdered Indigenous Women/Persons
- Identify and recruit Indigenous local leaders to foster membership growth
- Establish a communications plan both internally and externally
- Engage with NLC program staff and external organizations working on local Indigenous leadership issues
Stay tuned for exciting updates on speakers and session titles coming soon!
