The Rapid City, SD Police Department is on an innovative journey to improve public safety and deepen relationships with their community. By focusing on wellbeing and mental health and addressing the root causes of community violence, the Department has successfully implemented a Quality of Life Unit. The unit works to serve people experiencing interconnected issues such as homelessness and substance use disorder. The department also implemented a Youth Outreach Team that offers afterschool programming, and operates a food bank and other community-based programming.
