This course supports local leaders to courageously tackle the essential work of advancing racial equity in American communities. Participants will develop a shared understanding of key concepts and terminology related to racial equity, discuss how government at all levels has served as both a barrier to and a champion for racial equity and explore how institutional and systemic racism continues to deny opportunity and justice for many communities. Leaders will form a Community of Practice to learn and test proven strategies and leadership behaviors for making racial equity a cross-cutting priority for their communities and local government.
Key takeaways from the workshop for leaders include:
- A deeper understanding of core concepts, such as implicit/explicit bias, DEI, the levels of racism, equality vs equity, and much more.
- New insights on the nation’s history with race and the role of government in advancing/blocking racial equity.
- The latest frameworks for spurring government and community action on racial equity.
- Model policies, practices, procedures, and leadership behaviors that can help advance racial equity.
Through engaging presentations and group discussions with peers, plus office hours and one-on-one assistance from experts, participants will come away from the workshop energized, inspired, and ready to exercise a leadership role in racial equity in their communities.
