The Moment for Housing is Now

Local leaders are seeking solutions to meet their constituents’ housing supply needs in cities and towns. Yet, the scale of need is larger than any one local government, or one level of government, can meet. Increasing housing supply that is diverse, attainable, and equitable — and resilient to evolving climate impacts — will take partnership. Specifically, stronger public-private partnerships, and more supportive federal-local partnerships.

To meet this moment, the National League of Cities launched America’s Housing Comeback. America’s Housing Comeback, an initiative of the Housing Supply Accelerator, is a leadership table for housing policy leaders and innovators in the public and private sector to meet the moment for housing together. The table will contribute to America’s Housing Comeback by improving and accelerating growth of public-private partnerships focused on locally driven housing solutions; and pioneering new approaches that elevate the potential of housing financing now and into the future.

Our Approach

America’s Housing Comeback will accelerate and build on successful housing supply initiatives at the local level by enhancing federal-local partnerships and public-private partnerships.

Federal-Local Partnerships: Improving Intergovernmental Support

By improving federal support for local governments and the private sector, America’s Housing Comeback will accelerate promising and proven strategies to support local government’s efforts to close the housing supply gap in cities and towns.

Public-Private Partnerships: Fostering Growth at the Local Level

Through improved and enhanced public-private partnership, America’s Housing Comeback will unite a diverse coalition of stakeholders to align, collaborate, and advance solutions that address housing supply needs and challenges at the local level and expand, preserve and improve the quantity and quality of housing available at a range of incomes and suitable for local geographies, climate and economic conditions.

America’ Housing Comeback will utilize the partnerships and systems change model pioneered by the Housing Supply Accelerator to align and enhance both local governments and the private sectors’ efforts on the ground to accelerate housing supply through a system approach that includes multilayered solutions and actionable consensus.

About the America’s Housing Comeback Advisory Groups

To represent municipal perspectives and contributions to America’s Housing Comeback, National League of Cities President Steve Patterson, Mayor of Athens, Ohio has appointed Mayors Muriel Bowser (D) of Washington, DC, (population 700,000) and Mark Shepherd (R) of Clearfield, Utah (population 35,000) to serve as Co-Chairs representing local governments at the leadership table.  For-profit, nonprofit and philanthropic stakeholders in the housing market will also be invited to appoint representatives to the leadership table.

The America’s Housing Comeback will be supported by advisory groups consisting of other local government and private sector leaders, alongside key decision-makers in housing policy and the housing supply ecosystem.
