In a 6-3 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that protections of Title VII in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 extend to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer individuals. This landmark ruling is a huge victory for civil rights advocates and members of the LGBTQ community. NLC President and Los Angeles Council President Pro Tempore said the following about the decision:
“As we mark Pride Month, how fitting that the nation’s highest court would affirm the humanity and dignity of our LGBTQ brothers and sisters. As local leaders, we represent all members of our community. Cities, towns and villages welcome this important decision and its recognition of the rights of the LGBTQ community, ” said Los Angeles Council President Pro Tempore Joe Buscaino, who serves as president of the National League of Cities President.
