In response to the recent passing of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee on July 19, the President of NLC’s National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO), Mayor Pro Tem Denise Mitchell of College Park, Maryland, released the following statement:
“On behalf of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO), we extend our heartfelt condolences to Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s family, friends, colleagues, and the communities she faithfully served. Congresswoman Jackson Lee’s passing represents a significant loss in American politics, particularly in Houston and beyond. Her steadfast dedication to civil rights, progressive causes, and her constituents in Texas’s 18th Congressional District has left an indelible mark on our nation’s history.
Throughout her nearly three decades in Congress, Congresswoman Jackson Lee championed justice and equality, contributing significantly to landmark legislation such as the establishment of Juneteenth as a federal holiday and the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. Her resilience in navigating both political challenges and personal adversity, including her courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, reflected her unwavering commitment to public service.
As we reflect on her legacy, Congresswoman Jackson Lee will be remembered as a trailblazer and advocate for marginalized communities, leaving behind a profound impact on American politics. The void created by her passing will be deeply felt, but her contributions and dedication will continue to inspire generations to come.
May her family find comfort in the legacy of service and the outpouring of gratitude and respect from across the nation.”
