Cities in Action: Creating Digital Access for Students
Problem: Despite Chattanooga’s citywide fiber network, fiber-to-the-home service for economically disadvantaged students remained insufficient.
Solution: To close the homework gap Chattanooga created HCS EdConnect. HCS EdConnect provides free internet access, hardware and installation to all students enrolled in free or reduced-price lunch programs.
Outcome: These efforts have been successful in bridging the digital divide in Chattanooga. HCS EdConnect now serves more than 14,000 students and 11,000 household members who had little to no internet access beforehand.
Members of the press along with Members of Congress and congressional staff may be given free access upon request. Please contact us at media@nlc.org for additional support.
