Generative AI is rapidly transforming how cities operate and deliver services. AI helps cities utilize large amounts of data to get quick and accurate insights to manage critical infrastructure like water systems and street traffic. More specifically, generative AI has many capabilities to boost staff capacity, including assisting in drafting written content, translating languages, software coding and image generation. Residents can benefit, too, by using tools like chat bots to quickly access information or easily navigate permitting processes. As the technology becomes more widely used by local governments, several local leaders are considering how to ensure its safe and responsible use among city staff.
